Whaling History, Melville's Moby Dick, and Rhode Island Genealogy (March 31, 2022)

[I have been on a hiatus from blogging while I work on a genealogy of the Tew family of Rhode Island descended from Richard Tew and his wife, Mary (Clarke) Tew, who arrived in New England from England in 1640.  The following is from some recent discoveries about one of those descendants.]

Several years ago I read a fascinating book titled “LEVIATHAN” by Eric Jay Dolin who lives in Marblehead, Massachusetts.  The book is about the history of whaling in New England. On October 3, 2015, I did a “review/recommendation” about the book here,  https://filiopietismprism.blogspot.com/2015/10/saturday-serendipity-october-3-2015.html#comment-form  Mr. Dolin actually commented on that blog post and alerted me to his newest book at the time about the history of the American lighthouse “BRILLIANT BEACONS: A HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN LIGHTHOUSE"––another engaging read, especially since one of my great great uncles was a keeper at Beavertail lighthouse on Conanicut Island (Jamestown), Rhode Island.  Eric Jay Dolin is an excellent writer and the latest of his books that I have read is “BLACK FLAGS, BLUE WATERS: THE EPIC HISTORY OF AMERICA’S MOST NOTORIOUS PIRATES.”  Thomas Tew, who is often referred to as "Rhode Island's pirate," is mentioned on nine pages of the book and that book is in my small collection of pirate books that discuss Thomas Tew.

In reading LEVIATHAN, I learned for the first time about the ship Essex, which got stove by a sperm whale in the southern Pacific and sunk. See, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Essex_(whaleship) The experience of the Essex in 1820 was an inspiration for Melville’s novel Moby Dick.  The fate of the Essex crew was horrific. After the attack by the whale and the sinking of their ship, their experience is summarized at Wikipedia as follows . . .

"Thousands of miles from the coast of South America with little food and water, the 20-man crew was forced to make for land in the ship's surviving whaleboats. The men suffered severe dehydration, starvation, and exposure on the open ocean, and the survivors eventually resorted to eating the bodies of the crewmen who had died. When that proved insufficient, members of the crew drew lots to determine whom they would sacrifice so that the others could live. A total of seven crew members were cannibalized before the last of the eight survivors were rescued, more than three months after the sinking of the Essex.”

The sinking of the Essex  by a ramming sperm whale in 1820 was the only recorded incident of the kind, that is until the Ann Alexander suffered a similar fate in the Pacific thirty-one years later in 1851.  When that whaling ship was rammed by a sperm whale that had been hunted and wounded by the whaling crew, the Master of the Ann Alexander was a captain by the name of John Scott Deblois.  The fate of the Ann Alexander crew was much different that that of the Essex because they were rescued by the passing ship Nantucket not very long after their ship was demolished.  The harrowing story of the Ann Alexander was told to the New York Daily Times by Capt. Deblois and was verified by multiple eye witnesses following the inevitable investigation into the loss of the ship.

Capt. John Scott Deblois

While doing some genealogy research, I discovered the story as published in the November 5, 1851 edition of the N.Y. Daily Times.  Read the story in the four-part clipping of the article that follows.  Those with genealogy roots in Rhode Island, and those with a general interest in what might be called obscure events and persons in Rhode Island history, will also want to read the rest of the story that follows the New York Daily Times account immediately below.

AND NOW THE REST OF THE STORY . . .

Capt. Deblois sailed out of New Bedford, Massachusetts, but he was a Rhode Islander who lived for a time in Providence and later in Newport (where it appears he was born).  He is buried in the Common Burial Ground in Newport along with his wife.  His gravestone reads, “John S. Deblois Born Nov. 25, 1816 Died Nov. 29, 1885 Late Master of Ship Ann Alexander which was stove and sunk by a Sperm Whale in the Pacific Ocean 1851.” His wife, Henrietta M. Deblois is buried near him and she died in 1883, two years before he did.

There is an interesting thing about Henrietta.  She was born in 1808 in Newport.  She and her husband John apparently had no children, but they appear to have lived comfortably and employed live-in domestic servants.  They also had Henrietta’s mother live with them in her old age until she died sometime after age 79. This is all documented in the federal census records from 1850 - 1870.  Henrietta’s mother, the former Elizabeth “Betsey” Grimes outlived her husband by 32 years.  Betsey and her husband William had two sons and four daughters in addition to Henrietta. Before Henrietta married John Deblois, her maiden name was Henrietta M. Tew.  She was the daughter of William Clarke Tew (1770-1822) and Elizabeth “Betsey” Grimes (1772-1854).  According to the calculator on Ancestry.com, Henrietta is my 3rd cousin 5 times removed.

Meet Henrietta M (Tew) Deblois of Rhode Island.

A New England Childhood Tradition, But Is It Still Popular With Parents and Their Young Children?

I recently had occasion to recall and research a tradition in my family that goes back at least five generations now (and probably more).

My family on both my mother's side and my father's have deep New England roots going back to 1638 and 1640 in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.  When I was a small child my younger siblings and I all enjoyed a little play time with our parents and maternal grandparents that involved a rhyming poem/song and some physical activity on the laps of the adults.  My wife never knew the tradition in her family (whose roots were in Canada and New York/Ireland), but she learned it from me and both our sons and our granddaughters were wildly entertained by it once they were old enough to sit up and before they became too old and too big to sit on an adult's lap.  My sister's daughter was particularly enamored of the play and especially when done with her older cousin, our elder son Jonathan.  My mother and her parents knew the form of adult/child play and I suspect it had been around for a few generations before them so that it qualifies as a true family tradition now.  With the recent marriage of our younger son, we look forward to a time in the not too distant future when we will have the opportunity to pass the tradition on to additional grandchildren.

What is the adult/child play I am talking about?  It is a rhyming poem/song that is accompanied by the gentle bouncing of a child on an adult's lap in time to the rhyme. In short it is referred to as "Trot tot to Boston."  The version that has been in our family for generations goes like this. . .

                                            Trot trot to Boston

                                            Trot trot to Lynn

                                            Watch out [child's name]

                                            That you don't fall in!

The activity that accompanies the rhythmic recitation or sing-song involved having the child sit on the adult's lap facing the adult with his/her legs draped across the outside of the adult's thighs.  The adult recites or sings the lines and with each word, until the last, the adult raises his or her heels so that the child gently bounces rhythmically up and down mimicking the trotting of a horse.  When the last word is reached, the adult quickly opens his/her legs (while holding the child securely by the hands or around the torso depending on the child's age) and the child "falls" in a bit with some surprise–and almost without fail a hearty smile and laugh.  As the child gets older the fun and excitement can be extended by drawing out the last line–usually with a repetitive use of the word "don't" and extra trotting motions on each repetition–until the adult decides to do the "fall in" motion after building the anticipation in the child.  It was never a failure with any of the children in our family and always became a favorite activity.  [To see a version of the play demonstrated using a baby doll and sitting on the floor rather than in a chair as we always did, go here.]

As it turns out, based on a little research and as shown in the video link above there are different versions and variations of the song with appropriate motions for the last lines of each stanza.

                                            Trot trot to Boston

                                            Trot trot to Lynn

                                            Watch out [child's name]

                                            That you don't fall in!

                                            Trot trot to Boston

                                            Trot trot to Dover

                                            Watch out [child's name]

                                            That you don't fall over!

                                            Trot trot to Boston

                                            Trot trot to town

                                            Watch out [child's name]

                                            That you don't fall down!

Another lyric variation–with different lap orientation–uses "Trit trot" in place of "Trot trot" and can be viewed here using a real, slightly older child. And research also revealed a completely different song that uses the "Trot trot" introduction with different wording from then on and could very well have been used with the lap bouncing activity.  The song can be heard here at Smithsonian Folk Ways Recordings.  It is surprising the number of variations on this song and activity that are revealed with a little internet surfing.

Not surprisingly there is reason to believe that the lyrics and activity is not originally from Massachusetts, but rather is another vestige of our colonial association with England.  Many of the towns in New England were named after towns of the same name in England from which early colonists came.  Boston, England and Kings Lynn in England are close to one another.  And, of course, Dover is a famous location in England. I suspect the song came to New England from England and has survived and spread from there.  English Canada also knows the rhyme according to internet discussions.

Horse trotting songs for kids have been around for a long time and some may be more familiar than "Trot trot to Boston."  A couple of examples from Mama Lisa's World are . . .

Ride a Cock-horse to Banbury Cross

Ride a cock-horse* to Banbury Cross,
To see a fine lady upon a white horse;
Rings on her fingers and bells on her toes,
And she shall have music wherever she goes.

This Is the Way the Ladies Ride

This is the way the ladies ride,
Tri, tre, tre, tree,
Tri, tre, tre, tree!
This is the way the ladies ride,
Tri, tre, tre, tre, tri-tre-tre-tree!

This is the way the gentlemen ride,
Gallop-a-trot,
Gallop-a-trot!
This is the way the gentlemen ride,
Gallop-a-gallop-a-trot!

This is the way the farmers ride,
Hobbledy-hoy,
Hobbledy-hoy!
This is the way the farmers ride,
Hobbledy-hobbledy-hoy!

There are many variations on the "Trot trot to Boston" rhyme and play activity and there has even been a book published about rhyming play games for children that uses it in the book title, "Trot-trot-to-Boston: Play Rhymes for Baby" (Lothrop Lee & Shepard, 1987) by Carol F. Ra; but I still wonder how many New Englanders today are familiar with and engage in the "Trot trot to Boston" play activity with their children.

Saturday Serendipity (February 5, 2022)

Here are a few recommended reads for your weekend.

1.   With the release of the 1950 Federal Census this coming April, now is a good time to revisit the history of the Census and to re-familiarize with (or perhaps learn for the first time) about the evolution of the Census and particularly how the methods and content have changed over the decades.  Luckily, the second part of a two-part Census history is just out in the January-March 2022 issue of NGS Magazine. The first installment was in the October-December 2021 issue and both are by Shelly Bishop.  The articles put the evolving nature and content of the Census in perspective and gives insights into the instructions that guided the enumerators.  The articles are rich with links to delve deeply into each of the existing censuses and will provide the genealogist readers with new or renewed insight into the richness and limitations in the Federal Census over time.  Learn more about the magazine here.

2.   Nancy, of My Ancestors and Me blog, had an interesting and thought provoking post about "Presentism" and how it affects our genealogies. She supplies several links for additional reading on the subject.  You can read her excellent post here.

3.   Periodically I like to remind readers about the regular "Genealogy News and Education Bytes"feature on Randy Seaver's blog, Genealogy-Musings.  If you have never visited Randy's blog or read that weekly feature you should do so.  He does the service of compiling items from news, record collections, education  modalities, videos, and other sources all relating to genealogy.  You can view his latest installment here.

4.  Returning to the subject of the coming 1950 Federal Census, Marian Burk Wood, of Climbing My Family Tree blog, has posted a series of 1950 Census vocabulary "pop quizzes."  All three parts were posted last week and they can be viewed starting here with Part 3.  Read in concert with Shelly Bishop's articles on the evolution of the federal census, Marian's quizzes will help all of us prepare to milk the 1950 census for all the genealogical info it contains.

5.   Another blog that I like to mention periodically is Heirlooms Reunited by Pam Beveridge.  It is especially interesting and useful if you have ancestors and relatives from Maine, but it is not limited to Maine.  It is well worth a look and you can visit it here.

6.   Have I mentioned that the 1950 Census is coming in April?  It is, and the anticipation, hype, and preparations are well underway.  Another source for prepping was brought to our attention this week by Janine Adams, of Organize Your Family History blog. Janine highlights a FREE webinar being offered by Cousin Russ and Myrt of Dear Myrtle.  Read about the webinar and get a link it here.  It is available until February 9th.

7.   Do you know what a Gunnister Purse is?  Neither did I until I read Heather Rojo's post this week at Nutfield Genealogy blog.  I have seen such purses, but had no idea what they were called or where they came from.  You can learn more about them and perhaps solve a mystery about such items in your family artifacts by going here.

8.   How and why did peanut butter become so popular and a staple in most of our households?  The Weekly Genealogist of NEHGS highlighted an article that answers the question and you can read it here

9.   And finally, with a return to NGS Magazine as a source of interesting and useful articles . . . we have all had a need to figure out dates in our genealogy research and most of us are familiar with the Julian and Gregorian calendar change in 1752 in the British empire (including colonial America).  Carla Cegielski has an article in the most recent issue of the magazine titled "Calendar Tools and Calculators for Genealogy."  The article explains the use of various calendars for getting accurate dates and for converting dates from one calendar to another.  The article is full of links to very useful calculators and should find a place among your at-hand resources.  [If you are an NGS member you can read the article in the hard copy you get or access it on the Members Only section of the website.]

Saturday Serendipity (January 22, 2022)

After a month long hiatus Saturday Serendipity returns with the following suggested reads for this very cold weekend.

1.    The Weekly Genealogist of NEHGS highlighted an important article recently published by The Washington Post.  It is titled, "Help Us Identify Members of Congress Who Enslaved People."  After researching more than 5,500 members, the article publishes a link to the current list of every member of Congress known to have enslaved people .  .  .   but there are still about 600 members where more research and information is needed.  You can read the article and get more information on how to help with remaining research by going here.

2.  The Legal Genealogist, Judy Russell, posted a concise piece on the difference between dower and dowry, which you can read here.  She also explains what this can mean for the existence of records for genealogical purposes.

3.    As the countdown continues to the release of the 1950 Federal Census, the blogosphere is abuzz with information in anticipation of the event and all the data that will become available.  Marian Burk Wood, of Climbing My Family Tree blog, posted some very useful advice on an activity to prepare for the census release.  Read here about why and how you should start to collect "50ish home addresses" for those you want to research in the 1950 Census.  And speaking of Marian, Janine Adams, of Organize Your Family History blog,  spotlighted Marian in the latest installment of Janine's "How They Do It" interview series.  You can read the interview here.

4.    James Tanner, of Genealogy's Star blog, posted a very interesting piece about the publication of so-called surname books, why they are so expensive, and alternative sources for finding much of the same information.  You can read his post here.

5.    Nancy, of My Ancestors and  Me blog, posted a YouTube video she found at Eastman's Online Genealogy Blog, and it is well worth viewing.  It runs just under ten minutes and it is a colorized version of an original 1929 film interview of an 87 year old man who lived in the Catskill region of New York, not far from the Hudson River.  The original and the colorized versions can be viewed side-by-side in the latter part of the film.  Have a look here

6.    Birth certificates are an important resource for genealogical research, but anyone who has done much genealogy work knows that birth certificates are a fairly recent record document.  For example, half to three quarters of births in the late 19th and early 20th centuries went unregistered.  Get a link to a new book," The Birth Certificate: An American History" by Susan J. Pearson, and find out what legal and social change in the U.S. created the need for more uniform and reliable records of births by going here.

7.    Just for fun, Heather Rojo, of Nutfield Genealogy blog, posted photos of signs around Plymouth, MA that use Pilgrim names or dates and they can be viewed here, but for those with roots going back to a Mayflower passenger should read Heather's more serious recent piece in The Mayflower Quarterly Magazine (Winter 2021) reporting on changes and new publications for the Mayflower Silver Book Project.

8.    And finally, in a rare indulgence in self-promotion, I recommend anyone with family roots in Rhode Island to look at the longest post ever done on this blog.  It appears immediately below this post.  The piece involves a history of the Cadet Nurse Corps of World War II, but it focuses on the young women who trained and served in Corps in Rhode Island.  For genealogists with Rhode Island ancestors and relatives, the post provides many hundreds of names of women who joined the Cadet Nurse Corps in Rhode Island and it explains how to obtain a wealth of genealogical information about the women and their families using the Cadet Nurse record cards in a database available on Ancestry.com.  If anyone believes that they have a sister, mother, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother, or cousin who was a nurse in Rhode Island, they will want to check out this post and the table I created  from a review of the 2,000+ record cards for Rhode Island nurses in the database.  Here is a direct link to the post https://filiopietismprism.blogspot.com/2022/01/the-women-who-served-in-rhode-island.html

The Women Who Served In Rhode Island (1943-1945): Let's Say Their Names!

THE U.S. CADET NURSE CORPS AND THE WOMEN WHO SERVED IN RHODE ISLAND 1943-1945

John D. Tew

As we approach the third year of the world-wide COVID-19 pandemic, with its devastating impact on our medical system and the network of our healthcare workers, it is appropriate to look back at the last time we experienced such a healthcare crisis.  This article will examine how that last national crisis was handled and it will focus on those who responded in Rhode Island to do their part in what was a clear national healthcare emergency.

Beginning seventy-nine years ago, and lasting for just over five years, our nation called on a segment of its population (entirely women) to come to the aid of the country during a medical care crisis.  At that time it was not due to a deadly virus like COVID-19 or an influenza virus like the inappropriately named Spanish Flu of 1918-1919, but rather to a severe loss of medical personnel as the result of World War II.  After the entry of the U.S. into the war following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, doctors and nurses were swept up into service in the war effort in such numbers that most nurses were no longer available to serve the domestic medical needs of the country.  As a result, a call was put out to increase dramatically and quickly the number of nurses so that the medical needs of the country could be met while the home front worked to supply and support the military efforts overseas.

Starting in 1943, and lasting until the end of 1948, about 179,000 women answered the nation's call and pledged to devote essential nursing services for the duration of WWII.  These women were mostly our young women between the ages of 17 and the mid-20s.  They stepped forward to join the newly enacted uniformed service known as the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps and they received training, financial assistance, and a small allowance in exchange for their open-ended pledge of service.  It is estimated that Cadet Nurses were soon providing 80% of the critically needed nursing care in civilian, government, and military hospitals during WWII and they have been credited with preventing a total collapse of the U.S. health care system as the war raged on.

But then–and for the last seven-plus decades–the members of the Cadet Nurse Corps never really received the recognition, appreciation, and honor that they surely earned and deserved.  In this respect, the cadets of the Cadet Nurse Corps were overlooked or forgotten in a way similar to the treatment of those men who served in the U.S. Merchant Marine and provided our military with critical materiel and supplies during WWII. It took several decades until the Merchant Marines were finally recognized by the Merchant Marine Decorations and Medals Act of 1988.[1]

Recently two identical bills were introduced in the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives to rectify the long overdue lack of recognition of the service provided to the nation by the members of the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps. Sadly, at the close of 2021, on the cusp of final passage of some recognition for the Cadet Nurse Corps, the necessary amendment to the National Defense Appropriations Act (NDAA) legislation was removed by five Senators who refused to support the virtually no-cost honorary recognition of the Cadet Nurses.[2]  The bi-partisan “United States Cadet Nurse Corps Service Recognition Act of 2021” (S1220/H.R. 2568) would have recognized and honored the service of those who served in the Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II within the period of July 1, 1943 through December 31, 1948.  The proposed recognition would have been minimal, but very meaningful, with essentially no significant cost. Members of the Corps who honorably served between the relevant dates would merely receive the following:

·      A discharge from such service under honorable conditions issued by the Secretary of Defense designating the date of discharge as the date the individual terminated service in the Corps.

·      Individuals receiving such an honorable discharge “shall be honored as a veteran but shall not be entitled by reason of such service to any benefit under a law administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, except . . . [that the service of such individuals} shall be considered active duty for purposes of eligibility and entitlement to headstones, markers . . . other than such benefits relating to interment or inurnment of the individual in Arlington National Cemetery solely by reason of such service.”

·       The Secretary of Defense “may design and produce a service medal, memorial plaque or gravemarker, or other commendation to honor individuals who receive a discharge [from service in the Cadet Nurse Corps].”

While the men who served in the Merchant Marine during World War II received some limited recognition and appreciation from the nation 34 years ago, the young women who served in the Cadet Nurse Corps and are credited with preventing a total collapse of the U.S. health care system during the war, are still awaiting similar recognition and appreciation.  One must wonder why that disparity continues.  Many, if not most, of the young women who pledged their nursing services for the duration of the war are no longer with us; those that survive are now in their 90s.  They cannot wait much longer.

This article will “say the names” of the young women who trained and served in the Cadet Nurse Corps in Rhode Island so they that will at least get some measure of recognition and appreciation for their service to the people of Rhode Island during the national crisis of World War II.  Some of the women named below did not complete training and graduate with R.N. certification, but it must be said that they nonetheless served and provided needed assistance during the time they were in the program!

And, as the remainder of this article will demonstrate, for genealogists there is a wealth of information in the documents amassed about the participants in the Cadet Nurse Corps.

The Training Hospitals In Rhode Island

The Cadet Nurse Corps program was established in July 1943 after President Roosevelt signed into law the Nurse Training Act, which became known as the “Bolton Act” after the principal proponent, Frances Payne Bolton, Congresswoman from Ohio. Those eligible for the program had to be women in good health and between the ages of 17 and 35, but most were probably from seventeen to their mid-twenties.  That was certainly the case in Rhode Island.  Candidates also had to be graduates of accredited high schools.  Because of the national emergency caused by World War II, the law required that the usual 36-month course of nurse training had to be compressed into 30 months.  During that time, women enrolled in the training program had to receive clinical experience in four basic areas: surgery, obstetrics, pediatrics, and medicine. From 1943 to 1948, a total of 179,294 enrolled in the Cadet Nurse program and of that number 124,065 completed the course of study and training required for graduation.[3]   Nationwide, hospitals and nursing schools provided the needed education and training. The program also allowed for post-graduate studies by nurses who had already completed basic nurse training.

In Rhode Island, women enrolled in training programs at several hospitals.[4]  The cadet nurses in Rhode Island participated in training at the following hospitals as indicated in the table created for this article.

The Rhode Island Hospital School of Nursing – located in Providence, the original building for this hospital opened in 1868.  A training school for nurses was established at the hospital in 1882. The school was closed in June 1973 after 91 years of service.  Rhode Island Hospital is now the largest academic medical center in the region and has been affiliated with Brown University since 1959.

Newport Hospital – was chartered in 1873 and the hospital opened in Newport in November of that year.  Today the hospital partners with the Naval Station Newport to provide services to the military.

Roger Williams Hospital – was established as a homeopathic institution in 1878 and relocated to Chalkstone Avenue in Providence in 1925.  Shortly thereafter, a school of nursing was built there.  It is now known as the Roger Williams Medical Center and has been affiliated with Boston University School of Medicine since 1997.

St. Joseph’s Hospital – located on Peace Street in Providence was opened by the Catholic Diocese of Providence in April 1892 and grew to a 175-bed hospital.  It merged with Our Lady of Fatima Hospital in the early 1970s.

The Memorial Hospital – was originally funded by a $200,000 gift by William F. Sayles in 1894.  Located in Pawtucket, the first patients were seen in 1910.  The hospital expanded over the years to a 294-bed facility.  It merged with Care New England in 2013 and closed in 2018.

The Homeopathic Hospital of Rhode Island – should not be confused with the “Rhode Island Homeopathic Hospital,” which  was located at Morris and Hazard Avenues.  That hospital opened in 1884 and closed in 1900. The Homeopathic Hospital of Rhode Island was located in Providence on Jackson Street.  Groundbreaking for the hospital took place in 1922.

Charles V. Chapin Hospital – is the former Providence City Hospital that was named in honor of epidemiologist Charles Chapin in 1931 to recognize his substantial efforts to improve sanitary conditions in the city of Providence.  He died in 1941.  At least two nurses in the table below were Cadet Nurse Corps members doing postgraduate work at the C.V. Chapin Hospital.  With other hospitals opening around the city and medical advances making a hospital focused largely on infectious diseases obsolete, the hospital fell on hard times financially. By 1965, the majority of patients were psychiatric and Chapin Hospital had almost a monopoly on psychiatric hospitalizations in the state.  By the 1970s the hospital was closed, and the building is now part of the Providence College campus.

Rhode Island State Hospital at Howard (Cranston) – opened originally in the Howard section of Cranston in 1870, it was an overflow facility for psychiatric charity cases from Butler Asylum.  The Training School for Nurses there was opened in about 1912 and by 1938 there were twenty-five buildings on the institution’s campus.  It remains an active facility.

The “Cadet Nursing Corps Card Files 1942-1948” on Ancestry.com

Thanks to Ancestry.com a convenient database exists where information on the women who joined the Cadet Nurse Corps can be reviewed and researched. However, unlike some collections on Ancestry, the total number of items is not stated for the Cadet Nursing Corps files.  The files are from the 350 boxes of original data in the Records of the Public Health Service, 1794-1990, Record Group 90, in the National Archives at Washington, D.C.  Presumably, the original data records contain the collected information on all 179,294 women who joined the Cadet Nurse Corps nationwide, but this article will look only at the 2,178 file cards  relating to the hundreds of young women who joined the Corps in Rhode Island.[5]

The Cadet Nurse Record Cards

The database on Ancestry consists of images of the United States Cadet Nurse Corps record cards.  There were several different forms of the cards kept on cadet nurses and a review of the forms available for each individual cadet provides the genealogist and historian with a true treasure trove of information.  The forms are designated 300A, 300B (before May 1944), 300-A Revised, 300-B Revised, and PG (post-graduate) 400.  The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) provides a shorthand description of the various forms as follows:

Form 300A is a membership card and includes the name of the cadet, serial number, name of the nursing school or hospital, address of the school, and dates attended. Form 300B (before May 1944) only identifies the cadet by serial number and includes statistical information about the cadet such as age, hometown, marital status, occupation of her father, and how she found out about the program. In May 1944, the Form 300B membership card was revised to include the information that was contained in Form 300A and the previous version of Form 300B. Form PG 400 includes the name and address of the cadet and any post-graduate information such as the name of the university or hospital and what degree was earned.

The table that is presented below is based on a card-by-card review of the 2,000 plus cards created for women who joined the Cadet Nurse Corps in Rhode Island.  As explained via examples of each card form, the best and most comprehensive data for the genealogist is obtained from those cadets who have most, if not all, of the card forms in the data base.  Not all women who joined the Corps completed the training and graduated with their nursing credentials.  Some left under the demands of the training, some stopped out due to illness or personal reasons and did not return to complete the training, and some left the program “with default” and did not return while others left “without default” and were able to return.  A very few cadets left the program and returned or transferred to another training site and so actually have two different serial numbers. This means that not all named women below have what might be called a "full set" of record cards.

When a woman was admitted to a nursing program before the creation of the Corps, and before the May 1944 revision of Form 300A, the Form 300A shown immediately below was created for her if she decided to join the Corps.  Note that this version of the Form 300A is not designated as a “membership card.”  It was apparently intended at the time to be simply a running record of the student nurse’s progress through the program.  This particular type of card provides a little more data than the brief NARA description indicates.  In addition to the name and serial number assigned to the cadet, the name and address of the school attended, and the date of admission to the school and the Corps, this card provides the date of graduation or termination with or without default.  It also provides a good sample of the cadet’s actual signature.

The original Form 300 B shown below was a bare-bones card that did not even provide the name of the cadet (although some cards later had the names handwritten in pencil).  This particular form does, however, provide the genealogist with some very interesting additional information.  The card states the cadet’s serial number, school and its location, but it also indicates the cadet’s marital status, whether any college had been completed, and the usual place of residence (hometown) along with the occupation of the cadet’s father (unnamed). The reverse side of this form (unshown) surveyed how the woman found out about the Cadet Nurse Corps.  Note again that this form is not a membership card.

In May 1944, Form 300-A (Revised) was created, and it combined the information found on the original Form 300A and some of the information from the original Form 300B.  This card was designated for the first time as a “membership card.”  It also provides the genealogist with some new information besides another signature sample, serial number, school attended and location, and progress through the program; it provides the full address of the cadet’s home and the age at which the cadet entered the program along with the precise birth date.

The Form 300-B (Revised), as shown below, was also designated as a “membership card.” It provided the marital status of the cadet, another sample of the cadet’s signature, and for the first time the name of the “Father, guardian, or husband” and not simply his occupation as on the original Form 300B. On some of these particular cards, where the father was presumably absent or deceased, the cadet would insert the name and occupation of her mother or someone else.  Like the original Form 300 B, the reverse side of Form 300-B (Revised)  was a survey of how the woman found out about the Cadet Nurse Corps and the reverse side is also shown below.

The last of the record forms was Form PG 400A for nurses undergoing postgraduate training while serving in the Corps.  Only a handful of women who had already completed their basic nursing education and training are shown in the table.  It appears that they had usually completed some or all of college and they were continuing their studies to qualify as nursing instructors and or administrators of nurses.  These cards are not designated as membership cards and instead note that the named woman is undergoing “Postgraduate Study” pursuant to the “Bolton Act.”  These cards indicate the place where basic nurse education and training were obtained as well as any additional study, degrees, and experience that had been accumulated.

Using The Table In Conjunction With The Ancestry Database

The table below selects six salient data points for identification of the women who served in the Cadet Nurse Corps in Rhode Island.  One of the first observations to be made by a quick scan of the table is that not all data cells are filled in for each cadet.  This is because the Ancestry database does not provide an image of each of the record card forms for every cadet and thus some information that could have been collected is not found.  This could be due to the woman dropping out of the program before graduation or for some other reason.  For many women identified in the table more than one card exists and the data extracted for the table could have been obtained from a review of each of the cards.  This means that the genealogist will want to look at and review each card available to extract as much information as possible—including full images of all the cards for the woman of interest.  For example, the table does not provide (even if available on a card) the name or occupation of the cadet’s “father, guardian, or husband.”  Nor does it indicate if the cadet was married or divorced, and it does not provide the woman’s home address.  In many cases all these bits of information are available by actually looking at the card images themselves.  And, of course, one can obtain a copy of the cadet’s signature from the membership cards.  It should also be noted that many of the cards have what appears to be a surname handwritten in pencil on the face of the card.  It is assumed, but not verified, that the penciled-in surname is a later married surname for the cadet.

There are a few ways to use the Ancestry search function to manipulate and maneuver through the thousands of cards; a quick review of them is worthwhile to assist initial use of the database.

·       To find and review all cadets and card images from Rhode Island (or any other state), simply type the state name in the Keyword box and hit search.

·       To find all the cards for an individual woman, enter her first and last name and state in the Keyword box and hit search.

·       One can search based on a birth date and find all individuals born on the selected date and on dates near that selected date IF the exact date was included on a Form 300-A Revised card for the woman of interest, or the researcher otherwise knows the birthdate.

·       Unfortunately, there does not appear to be a way to search using the cadet’s serial number alone.  If one gets the date of issuance of a membership card from either Form 300A or 300-A Revised, one can sort the database to find all those who got their membership on or around the date of interest.  Simply enter the date in the “Issue Date” boxes at the bottom of the search window and enter the state in the Keyword box.

A few cautions are in order when using the table to then search for and review the images of the record cards.

1.     In several instances the Ancestry index for this database will show a date of birth that is erroneous and was taken from the admission date or other progress date on one of the record cards.  The only card that shows a precise birth date is the Form 300-A Revised, so if a birth date is shown in the table, it is from said form and can be relied on.

2.     There are many name errors in the Ancestry indexing for this database, but where they were found they have been corrected in the table on the assumption that anyone looking for a relative or ancestor will know the correct spelling of the subject surname.  This unfortunately introduces a search problem and will therefore require some persistent and creative research methods in order to get to all the record cards for women who are incorrectly indexed.  A few examples will illustrate the issue.

·  Mary A, McIsaac S.N. 189351 is erroneously indexed as Mary A. McDaris.  If one searches for McIsaac it will give you her Form 300-B Revised, and you will get her father’s name and occupation, but you will not see her actual birth date or if she graduated from the program.  If one searches for McDaris, her Form 300-A Revised will appear and it is clear this is Mary A. McIsaac not McDaris; the serial numbers are identical.  On Form 300-A Revised you will get her birth date and the fact that she withdrew from the program on November 18, 1946.

·   Mary E. Allen is indexed as E. Allen Mary and if one searches for Mary E. Allen nothing for a cadet in Rhode Island will appear, although you will find one in Michigan, but searching E. Allen Mary will give you her Form 300A, which indicates she withdrew without default on January 13, 1947.  Similarly, Ruth Donovan is indexed as Donovan Ruth; Sabina Shallow is indeed as Shallow Sabina; Selna Enid Kaplan is indexed under Enid Kaplan Senna; Muriel E. Roben is indexed under Moriel E. Rober, and so on for many names.

3.     Recalling that the original Form 300 B provides only serial numbers and no names, that form also gives the woman’s age at the time of application (but no precise birthday), the nursing school she applied to, her hometown, and her father’s occupation (but not his name).  There are at least 532 Form 300 B cards in the database that need to be matched up with names to extract as much information on a given cadet as possible.  This will be a painstaking process, but it can be done.  For example, page 9 of the 109 pages in the Ancestry index (created when one searches on Rhode Island in the Keyword box) shows the first Form 300 B without a name and the next twenty-seven pages are all of this type.  The first “no name” card is for the woman with serial number 98867 and we know from this card that she is from Providence and 19 years old when she applied.  Her father is a “Chief Supervisor, R.N.”  How do we identify this woman?  Using the table that was created in MS Word, the names can be sorted using the serial number and doing this we discover that the cadet’s name is Isabel Audrey Fagan.  Going next to the Ancestry search window and entering her name and Rhode Island in the Keyword box, we discover that she was doing her trainng at the Rhodes Island State Hospital, that she was admitted to the school September 1 and admitted to the Corps on September 15. Her form 330 A was issued May 11, 1944, but she withdrew from the program without default on August 31, 1946.[6]

[1] Few people realize the terrible cost of winning the tonnage supply battle that raged in the Atlantic during WWII.  There were 3,500 merchant ships and 175 warships lost during the Battle of the Atlantic, while Germany suffered a loss of 783 U-boats.  Some 3.1 million tons of merchant ships were lost during World War II and 1 in 24 merchant mariners died -- making the fatality rate of the Merchant Marines the highest casualty rate of any service during the war.  Yet, despite President Roosevelt’s promise that mariners of the U.S. Merchant Marine and the Army Transport Service would be granted veteran status and a Seamans Bill of Rights for their WWII service, the promise died with the President.  It was not until 43 years after the end of the war that that those mariners of the U.S. Merchant Marine who served in WWII were granted some limited benefits and official recognition by the “Merchant Marine Decorations and Medals Act” of 1988 (Public Law No:100-324).   Merchant mariners were belatedly granted the honor of WWII service medals and the qualification to be buried in a national cemetery (other than Arlington), but they were not allowed health or other benefits.  See, https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1988-01-30-mn-10163-story.html

[2] The five Senators were: Marsha Blackburn (R-TN); Joni Ernst (R-IA); Thom Tillis (R-NC); Rick Scott (R-FL); and Josh Hawley (R-MO).

[5] Women in the other New England states joined the Cadet Nurse Corps in the following numbers 1943-1946: Connecticut 3,175; Massachusetts 8,994; Vermont 667; New Hampshire 1,068; and Maine 1,289.  Robinson, Thelma M., Your Country Needs You: Cadet Nurses of World War II (Bloomington, Indiana, Xlibris Publishing, 2009) Appendix A 233-260.

[6] For anyone wanting to do this kind of deep research, I would be happy to provide an MS Word file of the table so that various sorting can be done to uncover as much information on a cadet as possible.

In the table below, an asterisk * indicates the named woman was engaged in postgraduate studies, usually for instruction of nurses and administration skills. A name in parentheses (   ) indicates the named woman’s married surname was noted on her membership card.
