Tombstone Tuesday (June 18, 2013) -- The Carpenter Sisters and Col. Cyrus M. Wheaton

Gravestone of Cyrus Martin Wheaton and his wife, Nancy (Carpenter) Wheaton
Village Cemetery, Rehoboth, Massachusetts

Gravestones of Rosella (Wheaton) Perry and James Perry
Village Cemetery, Rehoboth, Massachusetts

My 5X great grandparents, Thomas Carpenter (1733 - 1807) and his wife Elizabeth (Moulton) Carpenter (1736 - 1804), had at least twelve children (9 boys and 3 girls).  One of their sons, Peter Carpenter (my 4th great grand uncle, 1773 - 1814) married Nancy Bishop (1778 - 1857) and together they had at least eight children (7 girls and 1 boy).

The eldest daughter of Peter and Nancy (Bishop) Carpenter was Nancy Carpenter (1801 - 1855). Nancy married Cyrus Martin Wheaton and they had at least six children together before Nancy died at age 54 on October 5, 1855 -- as shown on the first headstone above.

Look closely at the James and Rosella Perry headstones immediately above and you will notice that Rosella Perry died on September 9, 1890 -- just over sixty years after her husband James died in August 1830 at age 33.  But you will note from her headstone that Rosella Perry was also the wife/widow of "the late Cyrus M. Wheaton."  Cyrus died on April 18, 1883.

Rosella's maiden name was Carpenter and she was one of the six younger sisters of Nancy Carpenter, the first wife of Cyrus Martin Wheaton.  As stated at p. 387 of A History of Rehoboth, Massachusetts (1643 - 1918) . . .

"Col. Cyrus M. Wheaton married, for his first wife, Nancy Carpenter, daughter of Peter and Nancy Carpenter of Rehoboth, Oct. 26, 1817. She died Oct. 5, 1855. They had six children: Nancy Carpenter. Sarepta Martin, Mary Carpenter, Cyrus Martin, Elizabeth Moulton, and Amanda Minerva. He married for his second wife, May 13, 1856, Mrs. Rosella (Carpenter) Perry, sister of his former wife. Mr. Wheaton lived to share the affection of twenty grandchildren and thirty-six great-grandchildren."
