This is the paper driver's license granted to my grandfather 97 years ago today! Everett S. Carpenter was permitted to "operate a motor vehicle other than a motor cycle" in Rhode Island for one year from May 9th, 1916. I believe the folds were placed there so he could fit it into his wallet. The license is made of very thin paper and it is amazing that it has survived in the condition it is in for 97 years!
